The UK recorded 1,695 road deaths in 2023, according to DfT STATS19 data. A further 29,999 people suffered serious injuries. While devastating, the UK's roads are among the safest in the world — road deaths have fallen by approximately 78% since the 1979 peak of 7,700 deaths per year.

Males account for approximately 75% of road deaths. Motorcyclists account for around 19% of road deaths despite representing only 1% of traffic. Rural roads account for around 60% of fatal collisions despite carrying only 40% of traffic.

The main contributory factors in fatal collisions are: driver error (cited in 65% of fatal crashes), driving too fast for conditions (24%), impairment through alcohol or drugs (14%), and distraction including mobile phone use (12%).
